AI & Design-I

I came across an app called Dream.ai by WOMBO.

It’s an app which creates abstract art based on words you feed using AI. This WOMBO AI based on 2 different neural networks called VOGAN and CLIP. Vogan is responsible to find images whereas Clip is responsible to determine if the text matches with the image. Their team work is a constant iteration of rendering images to create best possible images close to the keywords. Both algorithms were created by Ryan Murdock and Katherine Crowson.

BONKERS! utter Bonkers…

In matter of few minutes, it generates a picture which had an impactful story to tell. This branched out into a question, what if this becomes a part of form development process for industrial designers?

Moodboards and inspiration boards play a key role in creating a form language and opens a door to explore manufacturing processes. Keywords are generated as a principle factors affecting the attributes of the product, the way it will be perceived and defines the feel. If AI becomes a part of this process, would ambiguity be important? I think, ambiguity still holds originality and if given the opportunity, would we see any new shapes? What advantage would it have? How much would it affect the manufacturing process?

To make sense of what I am talking about, I tried this little experiment:

Initially, I started by feeding random words like “moon, mars, vacuum from earth, spaceship” with 3 different styles which were the presets. These were the results which I achieved:

Using the one which was close to what I was looking for to create a shape of a space shuttle, I chose the image to build up on.

Selected one of the sketches to develop into this concept watch

As you can see in the first image, I have used keywords “moon, mars, vacuum from earth, space shuttle” using “Ghibli” preset style and that’s what AI gave me. Building up on that, getting some line gesture, I started exploring various different shapes which brought a form to this ambiguity. Not only that this process was fun but it also allowed my to think beyond the form. some variations look like they could be on a watch dial and some look like futuristic spaceship.

Beyond this when I tried feeding abstract words like minimal, small and easy and it gave me this results:

Not surprised of this result as this app is focused on art and not design, to give me results related with hardware.

I wonder what results would we get if this kind of app was designed specifically for industrial designer to disrupt the form development process!
Anyway it was a quick saturday morning experiment while listening to Òlafur Arnalds.

What do you think?
