Manta Clean Robot

Personal Project | 7 Weeks | San Francisco, CA.

Tools : Rhino | Keyshot | Adobe Photoshop

Inspired by biomimicry, Manta clean is an autonomous robot intended to clean lakes. There is growing concern of lakes being polluted due to single use plastics and other harmful discarded items which affect the marine and water life of the lakes. Manta clean is designed and programmed in such a way where it collects the trash, dumps in a dedicated space and send the data about the health of the lake. It made sense to design it in such a way where it forms a strong visual trigger for people to be mindful and responsibly enjoy the lake.

Manta-clean functions the best given in a robust system. Understanding its primary function of collecting trash, it was necessary to define other concerns. This model explore the systems in which it would work the best.

Deploying System - 02

system02a.jpg

Deploying system 02:

In this system, Manta navigates the allotted area, collects the trash, swims it across to the station where the trash release itself due to the flow of water. The trash get accumulated on those stations which is trapped using the fishnets submerged under the water. The trashed garbage is then pulled out of water by technician. This system was inspired by Floating Fish Farms.

Pros:

  • System can be attached to bigger structures or can be suspended independently

  • Inexpensive in comparison to System-01

  • Deploying the Robot is much easier

Cons:

  • Robot might get stuck if the structure is not well-organized

  • the robot would need to be cleaned manually.
